BBC: Swine Flu Update (173 dead) Fifth US fatality.
ANNOTATION INFO IS UPDATED REGULARLY
Most official sources now agree that the virus effects people are experiencing are “mild” and comparable with COMMON flu.
There really is no need to “panic”, but you should take heed of suggestions to ensure you wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your face and mouth, and use strict hygiene when coughing or sneezing. (All things we should already be doing really
)
It is probable that the virus will continue to spread, and there may even be a sustained period of ‘inactivity’ before the onset of another ‘wave’ of illnesses.
The main danger does not appear to be from the virus itself, but from subsequent illness such as pneumonia, as the body’s immune system reacts to fight the virus.
Why is the pneumonia vaccine not being discussed ?
Up to half a million people die every year from COMMON influenza and associated pneumonia.
2001 Death rate extrapolations for USA alone for Flu:
63,729 per year, 5,310 per month, 1,225 per week, 174 per day, 7 per hour, 0 per minute, 0 per second.
Note: this automatic extrapolation calculation uses the deaths statistic: 63,730 annual deaths for influenza and pneumonia (NVSR Sep 2001); estimated 20,000 deaths from flu (NIAID)

WHAT KIND OF FLU IS IT AND HOW IS IT SPREADING?
The virus is an influenza A virus, carrying the designation A9 H1N1 and is spreading from person to person. It contains DNA from four distinct strains (hybrid):
North American avian
North American swine
Human Influenza
European and Asian swine
There is no vaccine that specifically protects against A9 H1N1. It will take several months to develop, test, manufacture and distribute a vaccine.
Two of the four main anti-viral drugs have been reported as being effective against A9 H1N1.
The World Health Organization, which has identified swine influenza as a potential source of a human flu pandemic, has also activated its global epidemic operations center.
They have now also said that the spread is ‘calming down’.
The Pandemic Preparedness Level is currently at – Phase 5 – Pandemic imminent.
CDC says it is too late to contain U.S. flu outbreak by vaccinating, treating or isolating people.
Of the initial 14 Mexican samples tested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seven were identical to the swine flu virus found in Texas and Southern California.
This indicates that the strain has NOT yet mutated into a less virulent form.
A WHO spokesman said 12 out of 18 samples taken from the Mexican victims showed they died from a virus with the same genetic structure as the one found in the US.
