Swine Flu at Work
Author: James Carmody
Forget the economy, panic is sweeping the nation and it’s called Swine Flu. Whether it becomes a global pandemic or whether it turns out to be no worse than any other flu virus that sweeps the nation every winter remains to be seen.
However this is an issue that employers should give a thought to now. What if someone phones in saying ‘I’m not very well, I’ve phoned the doctor but she just tells me to stay at home. I might have the flu but I’m not sure. Do you want me to come in?’. In this kind of situation, the employer has to balance the interest of staff attending work against the risk of a sick member of staff infecting others. Of course if he really did have the flu, he probably wouldn’t be well enough to come in anyway, but he may be in the early stages.
Staff who do not receive contractual sick pay may have no qualms about taking time off sick, but employees who receive SSP only may think twice before taking a day off work and struggle in regardless.
Swine flue does present the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to take a few days off work, as they can claim they erred on the side of caution by staying at home rather than risk infecting their colleagues.
Employers would be wise to think now about how to deal with this problem before it becomes more wide spread, both in terms of whether to risk someone coming in to work and whether to give discretionary sick pay if you ask them to stay at home. The first step for employers and affected staff alike though will be to get up-to-date medical advice.

What Employers Need To Know As Swine Flu is Spreading
Author: Catrina
Until now, the swine flu (Influenza A virus, H1N1) has not reached pandemic status, but it could. No one has a natural immunity to it, so everyone must be careful. The number of swine flu cases reported in the United States and Mexico is increasing and the media are paying close attention to the outbreak, so many of the employees may have concerns regarding their potential for exposure to the flu at work and the steps employers are taking to ensure their well-being.
If you are an employer, then you have the duty to protect your employees. You should let your employees know that you’re aware, and you have made some preparation to deal with the flu. Basically, you can share with your employees various infection control instructions, such as frequent hand washing with soap and water, or even alcohol-based hand gels. Besides, there are some other aspects you should pay attention to:
First, you should review your safety policies and develop an emergency response plan. You should try to reach the “best practices” that go beyond legal requirements. This will be helpful. And an emergency response plan can deal with both natural and man-made disasters to protect employees and ensure continued operations at the facility.
Second, you’d better review your telecommuting policies and adjust them. If necessary, employees can be encouraged to stay at home if they experience flu-like symptoms. In this way, you can continue your operation in a crisis. This will be helpful and reduce your loss.
Then, you should make plans for the impact of a pandemic on your business, your employees and customers. Try to communicate to your employees that you are following the situation closely and will take all necessary steps to ensure their safety and health.

Masking Against Mexican Swine Flu
Author: James Larkin
In these times of swine flu everyone’s wearing masks. Great time to rob a bank. Nobody would know who the robbers were because all the masks seem to be white.
I have not seen any coloured masks or decorated masks so they are hardly a fashion item – yet. Maybe someone will introduce a fashion range of masks.
The social implications of a global masking are interesting. For example before you kiss you have to lift up your mask, hardly romantic. And they are handy if you want to avoid someone especially if you wear a big mask and dark glasses.
It’s a bit like everyone is wearing a new type of yashmak and we are all making eyes at each other.
The most frightening thing I’ve seen is bearded men wearing masks. It really looks weird with all that hair protruding from them.
And what about pets. Can they catch the flu? If so, are there pet masks available? Is there an emergency plan for pets and other animals.
Do masks actually prevent catching the flu? Actually there is no clear proof they do. Government and health authorities say wear them but washing hands is probably more important.
It’s generally agreed that respirators are far more effective. They fit like face masks and are designed to filter small particles whereas plain masks only prevent droplets.
Mind you I would be glad to be wearing a simple mask if someone coughed or sneezed over me.
They say there is no cure for the swine flu – not yet. In the meantime I think the best thing to do is keep fit. Eat well and eat good nutrious food.
Losing weight would also be a health boost.
I’ve also had my annual flu shot. It doesn’t stop swine flu but if you don’t catch the normal flu at least you are keeping strong and better able to resist infection.
All we can do it aim for prevention and keep ourselves fit. That goes for our pets too.

Can you prevent swine flu?
Author: Arunraj V.S.
Swine Flu is a respiratory disease in pigs triggered by a virus called H1N1. The new strain of H1N1 is a deadly combination of viruses from pigs, birds and humans. They symptoms of Swine Flu are sudden fever, coughing, extreme exhaustion and muscle aches. There is also diarrhea and vomiting more than normal flu.
Risk factors: Medical experts say that people, who are exposed areas where pigs flock are at risk of contracting the virus. The strains of Swine flu rarely pass on from humans to humans. In rare cases, the virus mutates into a form that can move from one person to another. The strain responsible for the 2009 swine flu outbreak has apparently undergone such a mutation and may stay like that for a longer period of time.
Can Swine flu be prevented or cured? There is no vaccine which can prevent swine flu. Medicines like Tamiflu and Relenza can be effective, if taken in the early stages of the disease.
Is it safe to eat pork? Swine Flu is not caused by eating pork or its products including salami, ham and sausages. However, it is a good practice to cook pork over 70 degrees C, which kills the virus.
Why is it called swine flu? The virus is called swine flu because one of its surface proteins is similar to viruses that usually infect pigs. Pork industry in the US are putting pressure on the officials to change the name of the disease, because no pig as such have been found infected with this particular illness which has spread among humans.
